Children from poor families held back by lack of computer access

Friday, December 31st, 2010

As both adults and children prepare to exchange unwanted Christmas presents, such as games for computers at retail shops all over the UK, one charity is highlighting the fact that over a million schoolchildren still don’t have access to a computer away from school.

A new study by the E-learning Foundation suggests that at least one million children are being held back in their studies by a lack of computer access. The foundation states it is almost always children from poor families who find access to computers most difficult with only 40% of the poorest families in the UK having a home computer.

Valerie Thompson, the chief executive of the E-Learning Foundation, whose aim is to ensure every schoolchild in the UK has access to the internet at home, said “For those at school, this translates into very tangible disadvantages when it comes to completing homework, researching topics, independent learning, and communicating with teachers and classmates on the school learning platform.

“Without a computer with the internet, this attainment gap measured by the E-Learning Foundation that characterises children from low income families will only get worse”

She asked that more fortunate families bear in mind the struggles that some of their children’s classmates experience in trying to keep up with their homework without a computer at home. Of course for those families who do have a computer at home, household insurance is always a good idea, with many insurance providers offering cover away from the home if the computer is a laptop.

There has been no official response from the Government so far who recently supplied figures saying a quarter of a million schoolchildren from the poorest backgrounds had actually been provided with home computers through the scheme.

Some students may have no choice but to drop out

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

As thousands of students either start or return to universities up and down the country it seems that those going to Aberystwyth University have to face a housing crisis, which is forcing some to make the decision to drop out.

Aberystwyth Guild of Students made the claim, saying that a surge in student numbers in the last three years had put massive pressure on the private housing sector who just can not meet the demand. Two years ago over fifty freshers had to be placed temporarily into guest houses and hotels because of record recruitment numbers. Aberystwyth University is closely monitoring the accommodation situation for this year.

Guild president, Jon Antoniazzi, said “Eighty students were currently without accommodation, while twenty five had asked for forms to withdraw temporarily from their course or to drop out completely. The private sector housing stock for students ran out in January and has left students desperate for accommodation. We are now seeing a surge in students looking at taking temporary withdrawal or dropping out from university completely. Through three solid years of recruitment and guaranteed accommodation for first year students we have seen a decline in the number of returning students allowed back into Aberystwyth University halls of residence.”

Undue levels of stress are being placed on students to find somewhere to stay in the last few days before university starts. The university say they are aware of the problems and were closely monitoring the situation, not just in its own halls but also in the private sector. One student in her second year, studying German and international politics will be sleeping on a friend’s sofa, but she may have to drop out if accommodation is not found. The lucky students are the ones who have found homes to rent privately and have household insurance to go with a roof over their heads; they can look forward to a stress free year. Unfortunately not everyone will be as lucky.

Students urged to protect themselves

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Next month, new students starting university will take an average of £4,000 worth of belongings with them, making protection against theft essential. Research has found that a third of the value of these possessions will be carried with them when they are out and about. The average student will leave their digs with over £1,300 worth of possessions on them; these will include books, bikes, clothing, laptops, MP3 Players, smart phones, clothing and even cash. Other items that make up the total value of possessions that students take with them to university accommodation include cameras, hair straightener’s, a games console, and a musical instrument.

Vicki O’Connell, spokesperson for the research team, said: “Students are more tech savvy than ever before. Compared to just a few years ago we are seeing a much greater number of smart phones, games consoles and laptops filling students’ rooms. As lifestyles become more mobile the ‘must have’ items become more portable. Our research shows just how easily the value of your possessions accumulates. It’s important to remember that items which are lighter and smaller are also more prone to loss or theft. Our research looked at the possessions of an individual but the value of a household can increase considerably when second and third year student house share and have multiple sets of equipment. We would encourage students not to rely on being covered by their parents’ insurance.”

Modern day higher education makes it a necessity for students to have a range of expensive technology and when moving away from home for the first time will mean taking a lot of expensive items with them. This means it is vital that students take precautions, having cheap home insurance will protect against theft and damage and will give peace of mind and also make sure that they are not left out of pocket.
